This is somewhat of an abstract question but is important for my analysis nonetheless. Can you name a couple Canadian companies that you think would have a strong competitive advantage if they were to expand into the US or a similar country (i.e. Australia)?
Stantec (multinational consultant status advantage for companies in Australia, yet similar legal system) and Cineplex ('purchasing power?') come to mind, but I end up banging my head on the desk when trying to come up with others. Does anything stand out to you guys?
Q: I am looking at adding to my holding in SJ. In your report you mentioned the 38% ownership by SJ Intl (Glasgow Scotland). Would you expect any impact on the stock price from a YES vote simply because of Scottish ownership? Given the growing strength of the US $ what impact would that have on the stock? Lastly what kind of revenue and eps growth would you see over the next couple of years.
Thanks
Mike
Q: Your good work Peter is driving me crazier.
I am basically the 1.2% man…lots of savings accounts.
So,your suggestions at this time for my 23 year old daughters $36,000 TFSA account would be appreciated…it is presently,of course,in cash!
She has no reason to need these funds for the next 10 years at least. Thanks
john
Q: Hi Peter, hope that you are recovering well for your trip. At this time, would purchase of 10% positions each of Black Diamond and Stella Jones for an RESP be ok ? Other holdings are 25% BNS and 25% Telus. Balance is cash. Buy now or wait ? Thank you, Paul
Q: Hi Peter,
I purchased Stella Jones last November, thinking it was a solid performer. Nine months later it's hovering around the same price I purchased it at. I know it's having supply issues as of late, but what was going on before? And how confident are you in the future of this company? How much risk do you see?
Thanks!!!
Q: On july 29 your comment to john about stella jones - you said there are supply issues - can you please explain what the supply issues are? Are they having trouble getting the wood to make the r/r ties and poles ? Or are they having trouble getting the product to the customer?
thanks-ed
Q: I have a full position in Russel Metals that includes a 25% gain, and I have a half position in Stella Jones that involves a 5% loss since purchase. I'm thinking of taking half off RUS and topping up SJ as it is cheaper on a PE basis and perhaps RUS has topped here. Would you make this move now, or after SL earnings, or not at all?
Q: Good day...I hold mda, sj, bdi, and esl and have most of this year all are down 5 to 7% is this a worry at this time. All of these are in rsp so selling is not a tax issue...cheers
Q: Hi 5i Team
I'm retired and looking to diversify my portfolio. Income and growth have equal weightings and I prefer to hold a quality stock indefinitely. At this time I'm considering Brookfield Infrastructure (BIP.UN)or Stella-Jones (SJ}. I'd appreciate your comments comparing these two companies. Thanks
Q: I bought SJ in April when you commented positively on this company . I paid $ 32.30 and now its selling at $ 29.00 . What causes the weakness in the stock. Should I sell, hold or buy more. Thank you
Q: Stella Jones Inc. is a company with a good rating, but is lightly traded and on a downward trend. Should I continue to hold this stock? Can I expect a turn around?
Q: Hi Peter, I am thinking about selling my WIN stocks at a loss in my TFSA. What would you recommend as a replacement. As I'm underwater I'm looming to make up for this to regain some equity in my TFSA,so maybe not too high risk but still with growth potential, it doesn't have to be in tech.
Thanks
Q: With about a 7 year time frame before my grandchildren may need to start drawing money out of the RESP that I have for them, could you please suggest 4 or 5 stocks that don't necessarily need to "shoot the lights" out in performance but that are relatively safe and will provide an average plus return for this time period. Dividend payers/growers are fine with some added capital gains would be ideal.
Thank you.
Q: Hi guys,
I am wishing to add another position for my kids RESP. They have a 10 year time frame before the oldest may start needing the funds. Currently they hold cgx, esl, ipl, xeg, xfn, xre, xsu,mg,thi, in roughly equal parts. I am trying to balance diversification, with growth, some income and things that they may in time find interesting (thi and cgx). I am contemplating sj, key, or stn. What would you recommend or should I just keep adding to what they already have. Thank you for your help.
