Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Back in March you thought it was early to be buying EMP.A. My screener shows a BV of about $28 vs current price of about $21 and a dividend of 1.9%. It also looks to be forming a bit of a base on the chart. Do you still feel it too early to buy? If so what do you think is a better buy in the consumer space for a value investor? (A 3-5 yr hold is not a problem when there is a reasonable dividend.)

Thanks for your help - my portfolio is a lot more balanced since I started reading to your advice!

Q: Hi 5i Team, Empire Company had a 2015 unusual expense of $1.9B, what was this related too? Also, can you explain EMP's arrangement with Crombie REIT and whether you think it is a long term positive? Also, EMP has the largest concentration of stores in Eastern Canada (ON, QC, Maritimes). Based on recent challenges in the Western provinces & demographic data/projections do you feel that Canadians moving from West to East will have a positive material impact on EMP? Thx!

Q: What do you think of Empire (EMP.A) below $90? There seems to be alot of growth from 2015 to 2016, and enough growth from 2016 to 2017 to make it look pretty interesting to me as a longer term investment. At $90 with 2016 expected eps at $6.43 it looks like its trading below 14x earnings with good growth ahead of it.

What do you think of current valuation and do you see substantial growth beyond 2017 for Empire?

Thanks, as always.

John
