Q: Some analyst are saying that gold and silver might preform better this year. I do not have any precious metals in my portfolio and was thinking of adding a silver or gold stock. I am looking at Eldorado gold, first majestic silver, fortuna silver and pan American silver. what are you thoughts? brenda

Q: I read in the news that EXFO, an opto-electronics instrumentation company in Quebec City, wants to buy itself back (translating from the Journal LesAffaires). It says that the stock is jumping. Can you explain to me why it is that the stock jumps in that case? Why wouldn't the company buy my shares back close to the current price? I bought my shares around 4.80 so I've been 15% under water for the last while.

Q: Hello Peter,
I have read your responses to the questions relating to the two companies and appreciate the detailed responses. I have done very well with both and now am wondering if it is worth adding to my positions or should i wait. BAM represents 5 % of weight and BIP represents 3 %. I know it is in a different industry but I was thinking of reducing CGI group which has 6% weight to 4% and adding the proceeds to BAM or BIP. I have more in BAM as it is more diversified. Rather than adding more stocks, i just want let my winners run and add to them. Thanks again for your unbiased advice.

Q: Hi team, I noticed some of the pipelines are getting caught in a downdraft to add to the pain of my oil company holding. However I was thinking of buying a few pipelines like VSN and IPL in my TFSA, but before I do I wanted you opinion on the relatively new midstream ETF: HOG.Is this ETF too small at this point to buy a position, or should I just go back to buying individual names like VSN and IPL. Q: I constantly keep approx. 150k in cash equal to 3-4 years of withdrawals (1.25% interest) to fund annual cash requirements in addition to gov't pensions. Would you recommend buying VSC to raise my interest received to (currently) 2%?

Q: Hello Peter

Currently my portfolio has 11 Canadian companies :CSU,AYA,ESL,DHX.b,CCL.b,MG,IPL,RY,SJ,BYD.un,ATD.b .I want to duplicate each of them in the USA companies within similar sector/industry and pretty the same performance.
I know it is not easy, please help me if you can to provide me with the tickers of the USA similar companies.

Q: I have virtually no exposure to oil in my current portfolio and I'm thinking that CNQ, trading at the sub $30 mark offers an attractive entry point. I like CNQ because of it's size, dominance over the land base and operational efficiencies.
If oil continues its slide, do you believe CNQ will continue to go lower as well? How safe is the dividend at this point and / or if oil continues it's decline?

Q: Hello Everyone at 5i,

I am rebalancing my portforlio little by little and I'm looking at sector weightings.
Could you please check my notes on % holdings by sector, and let me know if you would make any changes to these numbers based on the markets today and in the near future, please.

In general I am a long term investor and can tolerate some loss/risk, and I frequently check market performance and make adjustments here and there.

Financials 15%
Energy 15%
Materials 5%
Health 5%
Tech 15%
Utilities 10%
Consumer Discretionary 10%
Consumer Staples 5%
Industrials 10%
Telecoms 10%

I have put Mg in Consumer Discretionary, and with a very good run, that sector has ballooned to 26%. I'd like to let Mg run. What is your opinion?

Q: This is a response to Dave's question about Globeinvestor Gold. I too have been using this service for many years and was very satisfied with the Portfolio and especially the Screener. It no longer works with any level of accuracy, so I've spent some considerable time looking for alternatives. For the Portfolio management part, I've bought a three year subscription to StockMarket Eye ( I think it cost $74 cdn for three years. It can be down loaded for a free 30 day trial before buying. It is a very good Portfolio manager and allows you to report in numerous ways. I also subscribe to Finviz.com for an exceptional screener. Although it is a global screener, it handles the Canadian market info very well.(the subscription is free).

Q: Hi Peter and 5i folks,

Love this service. I especially like the questions database which I consult on a regular basis. I also the quick return on questions asked in an often rapidly changing environment overlappded with long term "sage" advice. And I also think the new rules on question limits to be most fair.

It is now 2015 and it is time to add to my TSFA account. I am growth oriented now but will rotate to income in about 5-7 years. I am wondering if you could recommend 3-4 equities that have been over-punished (providing a good entry point) with the recent market pull back.
