Q: Hello Folks:
Currently we have approx. 65% large cap US. stocks and the reminder a few Canadian stocks and cash. We have slowly divested ourselves of all Canadian energy producers except for a good chunk of IPL. Do you have a few particular Canadian stocks you could recommend to use up the cash. I am am hesitant about materials/energy and financials.
We are quite confused and any help you could provide is immensely appreciated. Thanks so much!

Q: How much exposure does each of the big Canadian banks have to oil and related risk of loan losses? What is the oil exposure and which banks are more exposed? How much should one be concerned?

Q: Peter and team,

I have a couple follow up questions from the January 8 report on BEP.UN. The debt is high... if interest rates rise, will it sink the company or can the company continue to fund their operations without worry? Is there big margins there to absorb increased cost of debt? Are you concerned abou the debt at all?

Next question is around oil prices. You stated that oil prices shouldn't affect them at all but wouldn't low fossil fuel prices lead to cheaper energy production from fossil fuel burning plants and therefore BEP.UN would see even further decline of power production from existing assets and therefor decline in earnings due to more economic power coming on first?

I currently own Talisman and would like your opinion as I am thinking of selling Talisman at around 9.00 today and buying Whitecap WCP at just under 10.00 or hold off and wait for a higher offer for Talisman.

Q: Genworth is down 25 percent in 6 weeks. This seems surprising for a company in its type of business. Do you think this reflects an expectation of mortgage defaults? Other explanations? Do you think it is a buy for a conservative long term investor? Thanks!

Q: I would like your opinion on Tesoro specifically, though more generally on the sector. My overall thesis is that these fuel refiners and marketers are being unfairly lumped into the oil sector in general and that overall there is little reason to think that they should suffer from lower oil prices. Do you agree or am I missing something? Thanks very much.

Q: Hi Peter and 5i staff.
I've been browsing the website for awhile now and really like the service you provide, it's great for a novice investor like me. I've made most of the newbie mistakes in the past and as a result went completely conservative to GICs for a few years. Your service has given me the will to get back into buying Stocks and EFTs.

My first question is an easy one, but I think it's important for me to be clear on this:

Several times I've seen where you mention a company is good for growth, are you usually referring to a share price increase, or can this also mean dividend growth?

Q: Greetings
Petrofrontier has recently abandoned it's exploration for oil on it's land claims in Australia. The company has $10 million in cash, no debt and 80 million shares outstanding. So it has cash on hand of 12.5c per share and the stock trades near 4c per share. Considering the current low price of oil and that potential farm in partners are reducing spending in general how likely is it this company might just shut down and return that cash to shareholders? Or does that put the current management team out of a job and I am merely dreaming out loud here?

Q: I agree that the U.S. market is a good place to be and you have had a number of inquiries on which stocks to buy. But what am I missing? The exchange rate is at $ 1.19. To me, this means any stock purchased would have to increase by 19% just to break even. Can u help me with the logic of buying US at this time.
