Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I am a little overweight in utilities and am thinking of selling some TRP. I am thinking of buying AFN, NBD, MX or VET. Do you prefer one over the other? BAD is clearly an excellent company but I get the sense the stock has gotten ahead of itself.

8.3% of our portfolio is in energy - mostly gas (ARX, PEY & BNE) - not sure if I would be getting overweight in energy with the addition of VET.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Q: Hi Peter I apologize in advance with yet another question on Badger. At what rate are you assuming earnings grow over the next few years? I see in 2009 they earned $1.82,2010 $1.72, 2011$2.39 , 2012 $2.41 and if we annualize current ytd eps we get $2.82. Kind of erratic over the last few years. Once you let us know what growth rate you are assuming can you please let us know what multiple is reasonable for that growth rate? Thank-you.

Q: I am a bit conflicted by Badger Daylighting - BAD. On the one hand my investment has more than doubled ( on your recommendation)and the last quarter was great. On the other, I wonder about the lack of barriers to entry - already a "little Badger" ( Lonestar West - LSI-X ) has emerged in the Canadian market. Of more concern would be a larger U.S. player ( where BAD's growth will be)entering the space. Could I have your thoughts on Badger specifically in regard to this concern over lack of barriers to entry? Do you see it as a cause for concern? Thanks.

Q: Good Morning Peter,

Would it be possible for your team to recommend three or four stocks that pay high, safe, and growing dividends (at least 7%), and positive growth going forward? Or am I just spitting into the wind? In my income portfolio I already own BCE, CPG, DR, ECI, ERF, LW, STB, VSN with an average dividend payout of 8.07% (many of these stocks long-term holds since 2009). And in my wife's portfolio, she owns AQN, BNS, MBT, NFI, PKI, PPL, RSI, ZRE. We have a couple of $50,000 GIC's coming due this month that have been paying 4.35% for the past five years and need to re-deploy these funds.

Thanks!

Q: BAD. Not sure I understand your previous comment: "Badger is 20 times' forward earnings, but earnings estimates are likely too low, so call it 15 times on an adjusted basis. It 'should' have some cyclicality, so we don't think over 20 is appropriate. But now, one multiple point equals $3 per share to the stock."
Are you saying that Badger, at your adjusted 15 times, with one point equalling $3 dollars per share, is fairly valued at around $45. dollars a share? I don't think you are saying that, but I am a bit lost, I confess.
Also, can you comment on EFN Element Financial's results. Earnings look flat at .08 cents, but other metrics look much better. And Equity Financial, EQI's results are coming out tonight. Will you comment after release? Thanks

Q: Could you please comment on BAD's excellent result today. Also please comment on what the stocks PE should be in relation to their growth rate. When do you think they might increase their dividend and by what percentage. Ps this is a fantastic service I previously requested to get a hard copy of the magizine but have yet to receive it (I would pay more if required). Could you speak about BAD on bnn tonight. Mike

Q: For the previous inquires regarding Badger Daylighting's recent decline, David Baskin said he wouldn't buy Badger (BAD) a few days ago on MarketCall (when it was $50). Probably the reason for the sell-off.

Peter and gang, what type of growth do you see for BAD going forward. I see 2014 and 2015 estimated earnings are $3.10 and $3.11. Do you have similar numbers? Are their earnings supposed to pick up afterwards?

And lastly, is Badger the type of company you could go with a full 5% position with for a long term holding? I dont have any other oil/construction services holdings.

Thanks again.
