Q: How in the world did MBT – Manitoba Telecom get added to TSX Composite Buyback Index?
The S&P/TSX Composite Buyback Index provides exposure to the 50 constituent companies in the S&P/TSX Composite Index with the highest buyback ratio in the last 12 months. The buyback ratio is defined as the monetary amount of cash paid for common shares buyback in the last four calendar quarters with interim reports available divided by the total market capitalization of common shares at the beginning of the buyback period..
Insider shareholding total including directors, seems to be less than 50,000 total. Everybody owns rights or options instead.
Absolutely no buybacks that I can see. Also no insider activity other than right or options. Is this a mistake or a joke?

Q: I’ve held MBT for many years. The income has more than offset any paper loss, so for me it’s a hold. Based on yesterday’s results, I was wondering what you saw that resulted in all the downgrading? Seems to me that they did OK. What am I missing or is this just another case of analysts/fund managers chasing each other’s tails?

Maybe a contrarian play? Allstream sale? Foreign takeover (Verizon)?

Q: Hello.

What are your thoughts on MBT's Feb 4 report on their full year results?

Any thought's on their new CEO and the following recent quote from the Globe and Mail:

'The new chief executive officer of Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. says he wanted the job because the company possesses several “hidden gems” he believes he can use to deliver a new wave of growth.'

Thanks, David.

Q: You haven't commented on Manitoba Telecom since May. After the markets closed, the Federal Government announced the outright rejection of MBT's sale of Allstream. When this deal was first announced, MBT's stock jumped considerably. It has since given up these gains. Tomorrow morning the stock will probably plummet. Any idea of a floor?.... ie: what is the fair value for this telecom? Should investors abandon telecom stocks until the Fed gets its act together and stops its indiscriminate meddling with the rules? Many thanks!
