Q: Do you consider all of these companies to be core holdings? Of the ones you consider to be core holdings, please rank them (highest first) and give some explanation for your choices. Much appreciated. ram

We think all are fine. Our rank would be BN, FFH, MKL. In terms of 'core' though we would only consider BN. FFH is a nice cheap company but somewhat unique as a holding company and it can go through long periods where nothing much happens. It is a value investor with a portfolio of holdings. Earnings vary with the monetization of these assets. MKL is also decent and cheap at 15X earnings, but with no dividend and its much smaller size than the other two we would view it as 'less core' and not a hold-forever stock.
