Q: They recently reduced the amount of shares I had. But the broker TD is showing me only the new prices which have moved quite a bit lately. They are not showing original investment amount. It shows I am making money, but in reality to original investment i am losing money. Could i Claim the loss in the difference. Should I contact TD

5i Research Answer:

On Dec 4 HUT consolidated its shares 1 for 5. If an investor owned 1,000 shares prior they will now own 200. Cost base should be adjusted accordingly, but many brokers make mistakes with cost bases. As long as investor track their own costs and report to CRA they can still claim actual losses/gains accordingly. Losses cannot be claimed without selling the security.
