5i Research Answer:

There is a physical redemption process, but for most ETFs it is fairly exclusive to high net worth individuals and institutions. A few closed-end trusts like PHYS and MNT allow for redemption for physical gold if an investor meets a few criteria: large holdings (around 400 oz of gold), a formal redemption process, and some fees and logistics (insurance) may be required. Most individuals simply sell their gold ETFs and use the cash to buy physical gold if that is the route they wish to take.
