Q: How should we interpret the 'Best Stock Idea' list of stocks - say for example Blackline Safety. It is not in any of the portfolios (unless I missed that) and it doesn't show up in answers to questions about best stocks for growth, return from large drops etc.

Are the 'Best Stocks' just new ideas but not necessarily ones with large conviction from 5i?

Curious to get more insight into this section. Thx.

5i Research Answer:

We felt that the 'Best Stock Ideas' page helps to fill a gap where investors and members can view what we believe are attractive setups in the market right now. It is a combination of names that we would be comfortable holding for a long period of time, but also names that we believe have a combination or any of the following: decent momentum, solid valuations, or structural tailwinds.

These are names that we feel fit a balanced/growth approach, and they are not always the best 'value', as we feel high valuations can reflect quality. An attractive setup can be determined by either poor sentiment on the name, which we feel is undeserved, or it could mean growing momentum which could reflect a period of strong performance.

For BLN, it is not in our coverage list or model portfolios, but it is a name that we feel could be an eventual candidate for either, and it has held up fairly well over the past year, and its fundamentls are growing. The Canadian best stock ideas are typically those found in either our coverage list or model portfolios, but there can be times when it is a name that we feel could just be an eventual candidate for either.
