Q: Is the reason this ETF has declined by approximately 8% this year because of its weak sectors of the rails and telecommunications or is there something fundamentally wrong with the structure of the ETF ? I hold it in my RRIF where yield is important to me. Thanks. Derek.

5i Research Answer:

UMAX pays out a large dividend, indicated right now at 14.22%. But much of this is return of capital so it is paying out more than it earns. Still, TOTAL return for the YTD is 9.36%, one year is 6.21%. Nothing is 'wrong' here, but the structure can result in price delay, which is 'usually' offset by the higher-than-average yield.
