Q: Payf appears to present a low volatility and a significant dividend... I do not fully understand the structure of this ETF according to its web site, what are the real monthly dividend and your impressions/comments concerning this ETF for a " long term dividend investor", regards, J-Y

5i Research Answer:

Indicated yield is 8.56% and total one-year return is 12.54%. Assets are $35M and fees 0.75%. The monthly dividend of $0.1375 per unit is unchanged since Feb. 2023. Unlike covered call funds, this fund sells cash-covered put options. It sells options 3% to 5% below market prices. So, if the put is assigned it buys the stock at a better price, and if the put expires it simply keeps the option premium income and repeats the process. It is not an infallible process. The ETF can still lose money in a bad market if everything declines. It lost 0.90% in 2020 and lost 10.26% in 2022. The S&P 500 rose 14.38% in 2020 and lost 13.83% in 2022. So, the low-vol aspect is debatable here, but we would like to see a longer performance history. For now, we would consider it too small for consideration and just 'OK' in general.
