Q: In a bond portfolio, should one be diversified across regions such as Canada, US etc similar to an equity portfolio? Can you recommend a US bond that trades in CAD?

5i Research Answer:

We would be okay with a North American-focused bond portfolio, i.e. US and Canada. Unless an investor fully understands the international markets, we are okay with staying local. International bonds add currency and other risks. Some US bond ETFs trading in CAD are VBU and ZIC. Our focus is on equities, and it is beyond our scope to suggest singular bonds, preferring ETFs for adequate diversification.
