5i Filter – Overblown Corrections?

Ryan M Oct 14, 2014

We wanted to look for any instances where some good companies may have been thrown out with the bad ones and forgotten. In order to isolate these stocks, we decided to look for any TSX traded name that has experienced a decline greater than or equal to 15% (which should indicate overselling) for the quarter to date while holding a market-cap in excess of $100 million and paying some sort of dividend. The market capitalization metric helps weed out some of the high-risk and speculative stocks while the dividend factor should help provide some solace to an investor who enters into a position only to find that the market declines are not quite done yet. It is usually easier to hold an investment at a loss in the short term when you know dividends are coming in to help soften the blow.

The filter returned 17 companies and the criteria used follow:

  • Quarter to date price change less than or equal to -15%
  • Traded on the TSX
  • Market-cap greater than or equal to $100 million
  • Last fiscal year dividend yield greater than 0.1%

Not surprisingly, the list is dominated by energy companies but two names in particular stick out to us. WIN and ATP seem to be the sore thumbs in the list who have seen declines for reasons above and beyond that of macro-economic factors. Atlantic Power, a company covered by 5i Research which continues to hold an unfavourable rating for some time now, disappointed investors with news of a large dividend cut which was unfortunately the second one in a relatively short amount of time. Just as WiLan was starting to look good and gain some positive momentum, some negative news came out regarding a patent suit loss against Apple. While unfortunate, WIN does hold a strong balance sheet and good dividend which might make it interesting to some. The energy sector could very well hold some good value plays but finding the bottom can be tough and we think investors who are looking at picking up these types of stocks after recent declines need to be patient and think onger term once they enter a position.
