5 from 5i - End of the Hedge Fund Golden Age?

Michael Southern Sep 30, 2016

Another quarter comes to an end. The S&P/TSX composite index is on track for an almost 5 percent gain in the third quarter and is close to breaking to its highest level in more than a year. The biggest news item this week was that the federal government has conditionally approved the Pacific NorthWest liquefied natural gas project in British Columbia with 190 legally binding conditions, which could benefit natural gas companies and pipeline service names. SNC-Lavalin says poorer-than-expected results on two Middle East projects will have a negative impact on its 2016 EPS in its core engineering and construction business. There was another short attack on Home Capital Group. The report is trying to create 'new' fear but there is really not much here. Here's five stories we found interesting this week:

  1. Secular trends that are shifting the hedge fund landscape
  2. Being diversified means to be constantly disappointed.
  3. Do not expect any holiday gifts from US markets.
  4. Diversification: why perfect alpha is only 1/2 perfect.
  5. Six questions asset managers should answer to better their future.
